Referral Process

Getting started with First Steps is an easy process that begins with a phone call to the Systems Point of Entry (SPOE) office 1 (800) 387-7837 or by completing the online referral form. Once a referral is received, a Service Coordinator contacts the family within two business days.

At that time, she/he will talk to the family about the First Steps program and the developmental concerns they may have for their child. She/he will schedule the Assessment Team (AT) to conduct a free evaluation on the child in his/her home at a time convenient for the family.

The AT, which consists of trained early intervention therapists, will assess the child in all developmental areas to determine whether First Steps services are warranted.

First Steps

The LPCC acts as the local governing body to the First Steps program. Its purpose is to identify issues, needs and strategies to address those needs that affect the delivery of early intervention services to the community and families. In addition to the cluster LPCC, there are committees, task forces and other local First Steps interagency groups that meet in each community to discuss more specific issues.
